How does SBS improve the stability of bitumen?

SBS improves the stability of bitumen through a dispersion and stabilization process in bitumen.

First, the SBS absorbant and the light components in the bitumen then swell and unfold, resulting in a finer, more uniform dispersion in the bitumen. Secondly, the stabilizer triggers the crosslinking reaction of SBS to form a spatial network structure, and reacts with bitumen to form SBS bitumen graft. These crosslinking and grafting actions allow SBS to disperse stably in the bitumen and wrap the bitumen in the network, preventing the phase separation of SBS and bitumen.

The dispersion state of SBS in bitumen has an important effect on the stability of modified bitumen. When SBS is uniformly dispersed in the bitumen to form a stable spatial network structure, the modified bitumen has good stability, does not occur flocculation and stratification, and the dispersion state does not change with time. On the contrary, if SBS is flocculated in the bitumen, the modified bitumen will lose stability, and the SBS and the bitumen will be separated, and a stable sample cannot be obtained.

Therefore, the stability of modified bitumen can be effectively improved by controlling the dispersion state of SBS in bitumen.
